The Monsters In The Mundane

Transformation in post-digital media.

From Doll and cattails – a monster is born.

If you have children you know this, they are the best thing that ever excisted, yet they are also monsters. In this Blogpost 2, we have explored the transformations that happened on padlet. We found that more than a few of the posts turned into monsters or horror. We found this to be interesting. We each decided to explore this process.

To make a monster from the mundane. From something we see everyday.

I combined 4 objects for my monster, a plactic bag, my daughters doll, roots from a cattail plant in my parents lake and the old side-wagon for a Vespa.

enough. Perhaps you do die a hero or see yourself turned into… a horror…

I thought the rounded shape of the Side-Wagon looked great for the butt of a spider, or home of a hermit crab. I took my daughters toy and combined with my latest gardening venture and combined they made a nice monster. There is this joke in evolutionary biology, that eventually everything will evolve into a crab. This is called carcinisation. Perhaps there is a similar phenomenon online. Perhaps everything will eventually become horror if it survives for long

Instead of doing the transformation digitally, I wanted to create something, something that excisted in a real space. Something that fit the aesthetic of The House, but without being just another digital model. We create, think and are creative differently and in a much more limited faction than online. Instead of wrestling with a bit of tricky computer code i was wrestling with the roots of the cattail and the mud of the lakebed, the elasticity of the material. Creativity can shine in limited envoriments – when everything is possible little is interesting. When little is possible, everything has a potential for transformation.
